Famous Last Words–things we say as (or about) parents that maybe we shouldn’t

A couple nights back I was talking to a mom at my son’s 4th grade basketball practice. In the course of our conversation she asked how old my other boys were. When I told her that I have a middle schooler, her response was,… Continue Reading “Famous Last Words–things we say as (or about) parents that maybe we shouldn’t”

Bedtime Blues

Our boys moved bedrooms around a few weeks ago, and I’ve found that this change represented more to me than I realized. One of the hardest parts of being a mom is watching our kids grow and wishing we could keep them small. Change is never easy, but it always comes. And I’m starting to learn that what we gain is often far greater than what we leave behind!

Our Top 10 Favorite Christmas Picture Books This Year

Our last Christmas box to drag out of the closet each year is ths one with all of the holiday picture books because it’s so heavy. We love to get out all the decorations and make all the goodies, but cuddling up to one (or ten) Winter books stacked by the tree is definitely one of my favorite Christmas traditions. Sharing some of our favorites today, and I’d love to hear some of yours!

One-kin-stine

I have never met a one-year-old that I didn’t find completely and utterly adorable. Their pudgy sausage fingers, their squeals of delight, their hilarious interpretations of new words that will, for better or worse, follow them the remainder of their lives (raga-lo-li-lo-li will forever… Continue Reading “One-kin-stine”

Glimmer of Hope

I’ve always loved a good old “good triumphs over evil” story. Where the unlikely hero wins, the good guy gets the girl, the dragon is defeated, the treasure is returned to the deserving and rightful heirs. Who doesn’t love a happy ending? When our… Continue Reading “Glimmer of Hope”

Unfinished

M came down the stairs this morning in pants that would have been fantastic for some clam digging on the beach. I could have swore that just yesterday I had to roll up those same pants to keep them from dragging on the ground.… Continue Reading “Unfinished”

The Woman Standing at the Doors of the Clinic: Maybe if She Knew

I’d never pulled an all-niter in my entire life. Not even during dorm life in college. As much as I tried, I knew as I pushed the sheets off my legs and stared at the ceiling that sleep was not going to come that… Continue Reading “The Woman Standing at the Doors of the Clinic: Maybe if She Knew”

Those Care-Free Days

I grew up in a house that was a century old. The stairs creaked, it was a little drafty, and when my parents bought it, it needed lots (and lots and lots) of tlc. My parents saw something in that house I’m sure very… Continue Reading “Those Care-Free Days”

Protecting our Children

Being a mom has been by far one of the greatest blessings of my life. As I twirl all 22 pounds of two-year-old sweetness around the air to the fifth repeat of “The Hamster Dance” ( if only he would show me how to turn the darn repeat off!!), I remember what an incredible, wonderful, daunting responsibility I have to raise these boys to be kind, considerate, courageous, stalwart, chivalrous gentlemen. For their teachers, their professors, their future employers. For your daughters, for their children. For God. It’s kind of a big deal, and I hope and pray I can get it right.
